To provide industry professionals with the real-world knowledge and skills, practical insights, and best practices in the key areas affecting the future of insurance, The Malaysian Insurance Institute (MII) brings you the ASEAN Insurance Masterclass to deep dive into three key areas –digital, data and the climate - that are shaping the trajectory of the industry.
The ASEAN Insurance Masterclass involves 3 workshops:
1. Masterclass on New Digital Business Models by The Digital InsurerMr Hugh Terry and Mr Simon Phipps, Founders of The Digital Insurer (TDI) will examine the key digital trends driving changes in the insurance industry and focus on the emerging new digital business models presenting opportunity for all.
This 2-hour session will include:
- Key trends changing the status quo
- The power of Ecosystems
- Health & wellness models
- The OMNI Advisor model
- Digital bancassurance
- Making it happen – 5 key success factors
The session will share market insights, case studies and TDI perspectives and provide opportunities for Q&A.
2. Masterclass on Data Literacy Foundations for Leaders by The Centre of Applied Data Science (CADS)
Being data literate requires a certain set of skills, which will enable individuals to think, live, breathe and consume critical data and insights. In this interactive session, Dr. Stamatis Kourtis, Chief Data Officer, and Mr Romell Verdillo from CADS, will present the CADS data literacy framework for leadership and focus on the following areas:
- Understanding data & reading charts
- Avoiding data fallacies
- Correlation does not imply causation
- Understanding black-box AI
- Detecting algorithmic bias
3. Masterclass on Climate Change, ESG and the Insurance Sector: Turning Up The Heat
In this session, experts from both the public and private sector will share insights of climate change and ESG for the insurance sector. Participants will learn about physical/transition risks arising from climate change and measures to manage/mitigate those risks.
This session will also highlight global trends and initiatives on ESG investment and climate-related disclosure requirements.
Mr. Arup Chatterjee, Principal Financial Sector Specialist, Sector Advisory Service Cluster-FSG, Sustainable Development and Climate Change Department, Asian Development Bank, will cover the following areas:
- Managing Physical Risk and Transition Risk for Insurers
- Structuring Investment Solutions for Infrastructure Investment
Mr. Shinichi KISHI, C.P.A., General Manager at Sustainability Management & Development Department at Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance Company, will cover the following areas:
- Trends in ESG Investment and International Initiatives from the Viewpoints of Long-term Investors
- Climate-related Disclosure Requirements and Potential Impacts on Asian Insurers

Arup Chatterjee Asian Development Bank (ADB) |
Arup Chatterjee is Principal Financial Sector Specialist at the Asian Development Bank’s headquarters in Manila. He has three decades of experience in the operational, regulatory and policy aspects of the insurance sector in Asian, African and Latin American countries.
In his current role, he is responsible for leading financial sector development initiatives and providing operational support in the areas of insurance, contractual savings, and financial inclusion. His technical assistance and program development work focuses financial sector reform and development, regulatory and supervisory oversight architecture, pension and health insurance reforms, disaster risk financing, agriculture insurance, public- private partnerships, and financial inclusion.
He has earlier served as Principal Administrator of the International Association of Insurance Supervisors at the Bank for International Settlements in Basel, Switzerland, Joint Director of Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India, and Officer on Special Duty of the Ministry of Finance, Government of India where he was involved with reforms for the opening of the insurance sector.
He holds an honors degree in Economics and Mathematics from the University of Delhi, and dual Masters ̶ in International Economics from School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University; and in International Business from the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade.
Shinichi Kishi Meiji Yasuda Life |
Shinichi KISHI is assigned as General Manager at Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance Company and is responsible for managing and developing the corporate strategy on SDGs/ESG. He also serves as a member of Sustainability Standards Advisory Council Japan.
Qualified as a U.S. Certified Public Accountant, he contributed his knowledge and experience to developing the International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS) for insurance contracts as a member of the Insurance Advisory Committee of the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB). Shinichi also worked within the secretariat of the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) from 2006 to 2009.
Among various responsibilities taken at Meiji Yasuda, Shinichi took an assignment on planning and promoting Meiji Yasuda’s overseas business including M&A negotiation to acquire StanCorp Financial Group, a U.S. life insurer, as a project manager. More recently, as Chief Regulatory Expert, Shinichi negotiates with regulatory authorities mainly in capital requirement and accounting on behalf of Japanese insurance industry.
In July 2021 he assumed his current responsibilities for managing and developing Meiji Yasuda’s corporate strategy on SDGs/ESG as a General Manager at Sustainability Management & Development Dpt.
He made presentations on relevant issues at many occasions including ASEAN Insurance Congress in 2017 and 2019, East Asian Insurance Congress in 2018 as well as OECD/ADBI Roundtable in 2021.
Shinichi holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Kyoto University in Japan, and an MBA degree from the International University of Japan. He participated in the International Management Program at New York University.

Hugh Terry is the Founder of The Digital Insurer. Hugh has more than 20 years’ experience in the Insurance industry including operational, consulting and entrepreneurial roles. He is an actuary by profession and lives in Singapore. He is passionate about the application of technology to insurance business models and as well as writing articles he actively shares his experience via consulting assignments, speaking opportunities and participation in entrepreneurial initiatives in the field of digital insurance.

Simon is responsible for TDI’s global development as well as our business in Asia. He is also our blockchain lead. With over 25 years in insurance, Simon has deep industry and consulting experience, working in increasingly senior roles across Life, GI and Asset Mgt businesses in Europe and Asia, most recently as KPMGs lead partner for insurance advisory & digital innovation and, previously MD of Aviva, in Hong Kong.
He is passionate about helping insurers engage more effectively with customers and, making insurance more relevant to more people, through technology.
Dr Stamatis Kourtis The Centre of Applied Data Science (CADS) |
Dr Stam is a recognised expert in data, analytics and AI responsible for establishing the data architecture powering decisions across all levels of management. Passionate in using Natural Language Processing techniques to make sense of unstructured dark data, he has established the deep learning AI framework for intelligence gathering, and product AI algorithmic development.
He has developed CADS DDO framework, which assists organisations to design their digital transformation journey around data-driven organisation practices such as data literacy and data culture. Data-driven practices are proven to improve revenue, profitability and overall business value for organisations.
He holds a PhD from University of Surrey and an MBA from University of Warwick, UK
